White ethnics are white immigrants in the US with a differing future, and this can include English, French, German, and Australian cultures. Here we see a French immigrant working as a waiter in a French restaurant, taking part in the cultural diffusion which is very rich in our society.
Values are what determine a person or society’s sense of right and wrong, and good and bad. While policemen in our society are ironically often viewed as lazy and corrupt, what they stand for on paper is still the main idea of values – keeping society good and understanding right and wrong.
“The Trapped” is what we refer to the Urban underclass, a position in society where they aren’t in poverty but aren’t at the middle class level either. Occupations of those in this group can include janitors, garbage men and, as seen above, painters.
“The singles” is the group in our society which is unmarried and very individual. In the photograph above, we see a couple holding hands, not a part of this group, and on the right a man very much in this group.
“The Deprived” is what refer to a group in society born into a situation with limited economic opportunity and advantage. One born as a member of “The Deprived” will basically be forced into an area of work which requires little skill/experience and, in turn, results in little pay. Above is an example of the type of job this would entail.
Subjective meaning is the meaning that people give their own behavior. This is a photograph of the divisive pacifier, one that resembles subjective meaning because while most parents know that these will create an issue of oral fixation in the future, they force themselves to believe this will make a baby happy simply by forcing them to stop crying.
Stratification is the building up of layers, specifically in society the building up of classes. In the photograph above we see Miami, a city with richer and poorer areas definitely and definitively divided. Both sides of the class division, however, contribute to create a social structure.
A social epidemic occurs when society has the tendency to catch and feel emotions that are similar to and influenced by others, for example, social depression following 9/11. The photograph above shows a functioning society pre-epidemic (happy and content), and we should consider how their expressions, and styles, would change if there were to be a social epidemic.
A sick role is something very common in Western society, which is basically universal excuse for a person enduring an illness of some sort. In a sick role, a person is catered to – fed, not required to go to school, comforted and given less boundaries. The picture above expresses a person in a clear sick role, wrapped in a blanket, yelping for help.
A sect is a group with distinctive beliefs in a particular area (political, religious, philosophical etc.). This photograph depicts modern Miami Beach at its most common – shopping, dining etc. As a community, the Miami Beach sect is very liberal, very ethnically mixed, and very modern.
